Schools in Holeta have one teacher per class of 50-60 children.  Because of this teacher-student ratio, children starting school must have a solid foundation on which to learn.  However, due to a lack of necessary funding, the kindergarten class in Holeta was shut down.

As a result, the children were not only unable to progress through school, but the kindergarten-aged children 4-6 years old were left to themselves with no supervision, nutrition, or safety, as their impoverished homes required all parents to be employed as low-income laborers.  CDA reopened the kindergarten class in 2015 with the goal of providing for the basic needs of the children by developing a safe environment with quality teachers and nutritious food, aiding in both body and brain development.

CDA provides funding for teachers’ salaries, teacher training, and once-a-day meals for the children.  Through their efforts, the kindergarten school, MisrakMeda, is giving children a solid foundation to develop their full potential and impact not only their own lives and family but also their community and nation.  Objectives include providing a nutrition and support program, teaching age-appropriate life skills, and helping children to develop social skills, gain competency in beginning English, Amharic, and Oromia, understand their environment through scientific lessons, and become familiar with mathematical concepts.
